Philip M. Giraldi Bio

Philip M. Giraldi, Ph.D., is a former CIA counter-terrorism specialist and military intelligence officer who served nineteen years overseas in Turkey, Italy, Germany, and Spain. He was the CIA Chief of Base for the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 and was one of the first Americans to enter Afghanistan in December 2001. Phil is Executive Director of the Council for the National Interest, a Washington-based advocacy group that seeks to encourage and promote a U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East that is consistent with American values and interests.

Phil, a recognized authority on international security and counterterrorism issues has his own consultancy, San Marco International, and is also a partner in Cannistraro Associates. He was one of Ron Paul's foreign policy team in 2008 and was a regular commentator, columnist, and speaker supporting Paul's 2012 presidential run.

He is a Contributing Editor for The American Conservative where he writes a monthly column called "Deep Background" on terrorism, intelligence, and security issues. He writes a weekly column called "Smoke and Mirrors" for antiwar.com. He appears regularly on both radio and television in the United States and overseas providing commentary on foreign policy and security issues.

Phil was awarded an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of London in European History and holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honors in History from the University of Chicago. He speaks Spanish, Italian, German, and Turkish.
